It was announced on 1st June 2013 that Matt Smith would regenerate in the next Christmas special... it was then announced in a program broadcast live around the world that Peter Capaldi would be the new Doctor. This news was well received by apparently everyone and Jenna Coleman (having dropped Louise from her official billing) confirmed that she was signed on for the next year as well, providing continuity that Mat Smith had not been given on his arrival.
